Green Waste shows high potentials to be exploited for biofuel production through anaerobic digestion, but less than 9% of it is used today to produce biofuels.
LIFE STEAM project aims to develop an innovative prototype to convert low value green waste into hi-value biofuels for the transport sector and fertilizer for agricultural use.
Green waste valorization through innovative steam explosion into advanced biofuel and agri-products
Green waste consists mainly of lignocellulose, a complex structure very resistant to anaerobic digestion, that needs to be pretreated to make the biological conversion feasible. Different strategies can be pursued, but most of them require chemicals or large amount of energy. LIFE STEAM goal is to develop a sustainable process, based on steam explosion technology.
